IPods and Podcasting Technologies to Support Talking and Listening Experiences of Grade 4 Students
This article was based on a research project that took place in a fourth grade class in a southern metropolitan school in New South Wales in 2006. The purpose of the project was to identify the impact ipods and podcasting can make on student development of the speaking and listening strand of the New South Wales English syllabus. The class was given twelve video ipods along with splitters to allow students to share one ipod between two students as well as enough sets of headphones for each student.
The teacher with guidance from the two academic researchers designed a number of activities to incorporate the use of this form of technology into the curriculum over a period of two and a half terms. The teacher and researcher would then report on the effectiveness of the activities in terms of the skills developed in relation to the syllabus outcome as well as the impact on motivation.
It was quiet inspirational to see the types of activities that were being implemented in this project and the results were impressive particularly in terms of motivation and the effectiveness of the activities in achieving a greater understanding of the skills being taught.
